Overview
"Hashiriyu" is a rare horizontal cave hot spring, one of Japan's three oldest hot springs.
"Hashiriyu", which faces the Sagami Sea, is a rare horizontal cave hot spring, one of Japan's three oldest hot springs.
It was discovered about 1,300 years ago, and was named "Hashiriyu" because the hot spring water gushing out from the mountains ran down to the coast like a flying fish.
As Minamoto no Sanetomo wrote, "The hot spring water flowing quickly from the south of the Izunokuniyama mountains was a sign of the gods," before the Meiji period, it was worshiped as a sacred hot spring of Izusan Shrine.
Even now, 170 liters of 70 degree hot water flows per minute from a 5m deep cave, and the hot spring creates a mysterious sight.
From Hashiriyu, you can climb 837 steps to reach the main hall of Izusan Shrine.
